ATEX explosion proof equipment is designed and certified in accordance with Directive 2014/34/EU for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The equipment prevents ignition sources such as electrical sparks, hot surfaces or electrostatic discharge under normal operation and defined fault conditions.

Zone 1 covers areas where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation, such as around valves, pumps or filling points. Equipment for Zone 1 must be designed to prevent ignition under expected operating conditions and foreseeable faults. Common protection concepts include flameproof enclosures (Ex d), increased safety (Ex e) and intrinsic safety (Ex i).

Zone 2 – Rare Explosive Atmosphere

Zone 2 applies to areas where an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation, and if it does, it exists only for a short time. These zones are typically well‑ventilated spaces adjacent to Zone 1 areas. Equipment certified for Zone 2 uses all protection concepts including Ex e (increased safety), providing a suitable level of safety while allowing flexible and cost‑effective designs.
